Should I continue Nano? and finally an excerpt

It's been a few days since I've posted how i'm doing for National Writing Month.
Not really in a slump going into the third week, but the story as written if you can believe it, is nearly done.

Since the current plot and original outline begin as Jace and Sara have broken up, I feel that the story would be better served if I showed the reader their entire story including how they broke up rather than just telling it through the characters. (Thanks to Jill Noble at Noble Romance Publishing for giving new writers these tips in recent interviews and on her radio show! A must for any new writer.)

And that introduces us to Lil. Sara's best friend and a single mother. She's a complex character that I have had a blast writing the last few days.

The way I have her in my story now she's a minor player, but in actuality she's a huge reason for why the main characters are struggling at the moment.

I'm very proud of this story and I don't want rush it. Jace, Sara, Matt and the rest of the characters are so three dimensional and a lot of fun to write.
So I'm going to finish it, re-outline, tighten it up a lot, and re-work it. And finally, because i've promised...(sorry it's rough...be warned now)
Here's an excerpt between Sara and Jace at the beginning of the first chapter. Enjoy and comment freely!!!

Part of Ch 1 One!!!

A center, and co-captain of the Junior league team called the Haverton Mustangs, the Haverton Falls Classic held every Christmas Day was in Jace’s opinion, his last chance at ever getting signed with a pro team.
His mind reminisced with a bit of sadness at the years he wasted being short-tempered, overly confident and a hard partier.
With his athletic body and ebony colored hair, the chestnut brown eyes attempted to remain focus on the task at hand.
The sun rose over the Lake, turning it gradually to a light purple hue. Continuing to practice drills along a imaginary blue line that he could only see, Jace felt confident that he and his team would beat the Macon Wildcats for the Classic Cup easily.
Ninety minutes now passed and Jace was finishing up his conditioning drills with a long skate around the Lake before he went home.
She passed by him in a pink flash. So quickly, that he did a double take. The look of accomplishment and contentment he had suddenly turned into a look of disdain and dread for the young woman that skirted past him.
They were together for a year. Never had he fell so hard for someone. She was young at 20, he was young at 22. The things they did to one another hurt and complicated things between them. She loved him so intensely. He wanted to commit to being a couple, but couldn’t do it without his temper or giving her a ridiculous ultimatium.
Wearing a pink parka jacket with a white hat and gloves, Sara Reilly skated around her ex-boyfriend taunting him relentlessly. Jace’s eyes narrowed, his lips pursed tightly as to not say something more offensive to her than he normally did.
“What the hell are you doing here Sara?”
She laughed. ”Skating. And you Jace?”
He began to skate away from her. He was in no mood to deal drama. Especially from her.
“Leaving!”
She stopped directly in front of him, her blue eyes locked mischievously with his.
For most people the look Jace was giving her would twart them away, however she ignored it and in fact reveled in it.
Jesting, she replied. “Aww, not now. I was going to see if you wanted to play with me a little before you went to practice.”
He rolled his eyes and continued off the ice. She quickly trailed behind him in an attempt to catch up.
“Oh c’mon Jace, I’m teasing. You know me.”
“Yeah, unfortunately I do. “

wrote 5753 words on 11/15

Making up for lost time....Was very very productive.
Story is now really coming along. Everyone is right, the 2nd week is the most difficult.
I had a total of 20,310 as of 11/15 and will be writing some more early tomorrow after some errands.
Pretty proud.

as of 11/11 doing ok

i had problems with the 5th chapter of my story, i've always had issues w/descriptions and it at times it takes me forever to write or describe exactly how a scene is playing around my head.
But tonight, after working on it. I think i got it and was able to move on.
So much that I wrote tonight 2,2021 giving me a word count so far 14,557. I wanted to be at 15,000 today.
But due to real life...I'll take it.

11/5 & 6

Nothing on 11/5. Exhausted and preoccupied to do anything else.
But on 11/6, 1158 words. total word count as of 11/6 10,670.

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

1748 words 11/4

I had a really good night writing wise...I really do like my story a lot.
Normally introverted, my main character Jace finally opened up about his father's illness and how his mother leaving angered him.
Pretty good for a rough, rough draft.
Total word count as of 11/4. 9522

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

11/3 Update 1042 words

Okay.....Not the goal I intended for tonight which was for 1700 but the third chapter was hard to start. Still not crazy about the description at the beginning, but i'l definitely fix that after NaNo is over. knowing me probably before....

Total count for three days. 7,754

Monday, November 2, 2009

11/2 NaNo Update 2055 words oh yeah!

Total word count for Day Two 2,055! Making total word count so far 6712

The story is coming along very very well. Especially the dialogue. Writing for a character like Jace is a lot of fun because his wit just bites. The dynamic between he and Sara is great.
The only thing I wish now is that I started the story with how they actually got together in the beginning.
Chapter 2 ended for me on a therapeutic note.
I wasn't going to write about terminal illness at the moment due to my father's recent death. But for some reason the sub-plot in this story needed to be told and so far it's been great.
I know i promised an excerpt but I'm just too tired.
Good night!

Meet Jace and Sara

Meet Jace McKinnon...

Sexy, overly confident with a short temper. Jace, at the moment has a lot on his plate these days. Captain of his Junior League Hockey Team, called the Haverton Mustangs, Jace is on track to become a top draft pick for the NHL.
But will an ill father, mounting medical bills and relationship that won't die, end his ability to focus on what's important?

Sara Reilly

Headstrong and just as stubborn as her ex-boyfriend. Sara's concern for her ex boyfriend, is making her lose focus on placing in Regionals. A favorite to win and go onto the National Championships, will she also put her hopes one the line for Jace?

NaNo Status 11/1

Wow what a day!
I'm very proud for my first 24 hrs of NaNo to have gone so well. At 8 o clock, I ended with a word count of 4,657 words.

Not bad for person who listened to her inner editor at the last minute and changed her story plans all together.

So no paranormal werewolf story or dragon story.

This story is a contemporary romance called "On the Line" about a Junior hockey player named Jace McKinnon, who while dealing with a cancer stricken father and dealing with the pressures of leading his team to victory at the annual Haverton Falls Classic, has fallen in love with his best friend's sister named Sara Reilly, who in her own right is a favorite to win at her Regional championship, held in their fictional hometown of Haverton Falls, New York.

The two are two opposites that attract. They argue over everything, regardless of how little or small the problem is. When they're together it is good, very good. When they aren't, god help the people around them both.

The story without giving much away, begins a year after they break up. When both with weeks to spare are training for their respective competitions.

Here's a look at the main characters.

Here we go!

50,000 words in a month. Crazy huh?
I think the longest story i wrote years ago was back in high school. I do believe it was around 40,000 words.
It was a sappy teen angst romance. Nothing big...But i loved my characters.

I remember when I started that story. I was fifteen. It was on a Saturday where for once i had nothing to do. I got an idea in my head and then i began to write.
And Write...And write.
I wrote where ever, whenever, even when i wasn't supposed to.
Never had that happened to me before.
As I looked at the manuscript earlier this week all typed and double spaced, it may not have been so great, but I remember the feeling of working on something so hard and creating characters that you hope that all could relate to and loving every minute of it.
It was sad when my characters story stopped with The End.
But as their story stopped, another one opens.
This is my first time entering National Novel Writing Month. It's a contest that kind of tests your limits in what you can do writing-wise.
In my opinion, its a you vs. you type of thing.
Pretty much, you have to write a very, very rough draft of a 50,000 word novel in 30 days.

Sound easy? Not really...Mix in real life, a huge family holiday in Thanksgiving, HS reunion weekend (not attending, but hope to see some long-time friends that weekend) the usual writers block and times where want to write, blah, blah, blah... craziness...

Call me a hot mess!!

It starts offically in 2 hrs.
Every day, i'll post a blog along w/a word count to let everyone know how i'm doing.
Tomorrow, (providing that have not collapsed from sleep deprivation! LOL) i'll tell you all what i'm working on!

Love you all.

xoxo Shell

Getting back into the swing of things

Feeling so much better.
So much that I'm going to try National Writing Month in Nov.
For the month of Nov, all of you can see if I can reach my goal of writing 50,000 words in a month.

I've plotted out the story i'm going to do as best I can. It'll be fun to see if I can stay focused and reach the goal.

All in the binder, all the notes are as ready as they can be.

However, before NaNo, there's a paranormal x-mas story that i'm nearly done with that i'd like to submit before it's Nov. 1st deadline.

Back to tell you soon if I get it done.

So far, i'm 4000 words into 5k-7,000 goal.

Later all! :)

Dragons, Rockstars and Werewolves...Oh My!!!

So, i'm at home thru at least the first part of Oct on medical leave.
Being that i'm in bed for the most part, it leaves time for me to write.
So i'm in 2nd draft mode for most of them, 1/2 of them are done.
Part of me I think is scared to finish them and submit them to a publisher even though I got positive feedback earlier this summer on a entry I submitted.
I know what I did wrong on that and I don't want that to happen again.
Funny thing is that i have sooo many first drafts done on at least four or five different stories that I don't know where to start.
Does that happen to anyone else? Should I finish doing the ones I've completed and then try submit them? Or should I focus on the new material? UGGH..LOL
I'm editing most of them now and started really outlining this werewolf story that came to my head a few days ago.
I'm really thinking thru the plot, but i've been fleshing out the characters and so far I like them all. Just need more from the protagonist. I'll tell you all about all of them soon.

Meantime, I'll let you be the judge for Dragon Wars: Here's the first few paragraphs...let me know what you think?

Dragon Wars: Kergan

The sun was luminous throughout the lady’s bedchamber as she and her beloved prince lay quietly next to one another.
Stolen but precious moments, it was these late afternoons that the young couple both loved and hated.
With his world so chaotic, he enjoyed any free time they could spare. Veiled in sunlight, her petite frame faced his, welcoming him once more to be inside her.
The love they shared enveloped him. In their short years together, the two of them had been through what most couples did in a lifetime. He was never so content with anyone in his life.
It was the opposite for her. She hated the silence. It was an eerie calm that meant the visions she was seeing would return and only get worse. Fire and destruction was seen when she closed her eyes. She needed him to keep her mind occupied with talk of their upcoming wedding but knew if she pushed, he’d either stay quiet or they’d quarrel about the upcoming Dragon Race being held in a couple of nights.

Dampened by their lovemaking, the prince began to play with a stray blonde curl that lay against his lover’s chest. When she didn’t respond, he couldn’t help but to notice the concern on her face. “What is it my love?”
She told him pointedly. “I hate the races.”
Reassuring her, he gently kissed the top of her forehead, smoothing her hair back in an attempt to reassure her. “No, you don’t.”
She played with the cascade of dark brown waves that flowed around his chiseled face. She smiled at him weakly. “Yes, I do Julian.”
He rolled his eyes in aggravation. He had a feeling something was wrong but for now he only wanted to cherish the few hours they had left together before he rode in the race in a couple of days.
“My visions tell me of fire and destruction. They’re growing with more intensity as the Races approach.” She warned.

The Dreaded Blue Screen

Last night as I was talking to a friend on the phone, I went into my Mircosoft Word program to pull up some notes for a story idea to work on while I'm recovering from surgery.

And there it was....A white screen followed by THE BLUE SCREEN.

Thankfully, i had backed up almost everything a couple of days earlier on an external hard drive except for a short story.
My very old version of Word bit the dust. I updated it and everything thankfully was there and reconfigured.
Scared me to no end!!!

My new obsession!

Hope everyone had a great summer.

Mine was good overall w/some life lessons and illness mixed in.

While taking a sabbatical from Stay and all things Dragon Wars for a bit, I got the idea for a short story back in July....

It has the makings of a very very good non-ff story....

While the first part of that story had some issues plot-wise, i'm in the process of revamping the story due to the characters.

It's a contemporary old-fashioned/feel-good/rags to riches/romantic rock fable that spans from 1984-to present day in 3-4 small novellas.

My muse is about as cool as cool can get, when I got my idea for "Rock Star" this renaissance man's video came on late one night as I went to bed and his looks and personality embodied what I wanted my lead singer/main character Chris Knight to be.

Intelligent, incredibly talented and also sexy as sexy can get!!

Kip Winger is the BEST!!!! You're a great muse with a bunch of talent!! Rock on!!!

Take care all..Will be back soon. Enjoy your Labor Day Holiday...And Be Safe..

Happy Father's Day-Memories of my dad

I wanted to say Happy Father's Day to all the great father's out there!!! I hope you all had a great day today.

Been thinking a lot about my own dad today who is unfortunately is very ill and at this point doesn't recognize his children.

I had only recently gotten to know him over the last four or five years.

It's a long story. Way too long to go into here and for now...Still much too painful for me to even write about...
One of the lessons since he's been ill is to try and focus on the positive.

I'm sure everyone says, it's easier said than done, but as they say. Life is far too short to focus on the negatives because you just never know.

One of the positives of my knowing him was only a couple of years ago.
I went to my sister's home in Texas to celebrate my nieces and nephew's graduations.
He initially wasn't going to go. But after lots of friendly persuasion, he did.

So glad that he did too. After some minor bumps in the road, it all and all was a very very happy trip! It brought my sister and I much closer than we had been. I also, got to know my brother- in -law, my two beautiful nieces, my nephew and my step mom pretty well.

He was very happy. Laughing, talking, telling us stories about his life on the road as a jazz musician. (he gave us all a cd too...very good!)

As I was on the plane going home, I couldn't help but wonder, what if I had known him sooner? Would all our lives have been different? What about my sister and brother's? Would how the three of us felt about him be different if he were this person we all met on this particular trip or would he have been the one he had all heard different things about over the years?

We'll never know.

Unfortunately, very soon after I got home, not only did my father have a stroke, but also later on that year, he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer.

The stroke left him pretty much without a lot of memories of any of us. The cancer is now extremely painful because it has now spread. He is now being kept as comfortable they can.

Today, I tried to focus on only the good things about him. His humor, his great musical talent, and how he was to all of us for that brief moment that we had him healthy and strong.

The past can rob you of soooo many things. What i've learned throughout this journey is for people to NEVER let one moment if you can go unnoticed with your children. However, how large or small that moment could be.

Because you just never know what the future could bring. Love and enjoy every moment of your family..

Love to all , Shell xxxxx

Back to the grind. Real life called this evening. 378 words.

And if I could physically keep my eyes open, i'd go for more than that. But I can't.

My muse wants to take over this evening... In the worse way. His voice was calling so loudly that his words were going quicker than my fingers!! LOL.

Did some major cutting and tweaking on the Dragon story today.

Even though I want to do more. It's back to work for me tomorrow.

All together today. 787 words done.

Happy w/that.

Monday, April 20, 2009

not too bad of a day...posted a new chapter, edited chapter of Stay today.

Began to edit Dragon Wars and did add about 500 words to it so far due to a lot of holes in the original story.

Going back will start on chapter 3 and to the same thing.

I originally was going to do this Dragon Story as a Nocturne Bites. Maybe, I should have kept it to a full length Nocturne.

This will help me focus!!

Went to my first local area writers group meeting yesterday. I had fun and came away with a lot of useful things to do.

I now i have goals to meet. 500 words a day. I think I can do that. Since I'm off for the next couple of days. I can definitely do that. Will start work on Stay and post a chapter...Maybe two this week. Not sure.....But they'll definitely be a chapter posted...

And Dragon Wars...It's done...Very very rough w/a lot of holes in it and the goal and really make it a first rough draft and edit it for my Crit Partner's to look at.

500 words...5 days......(Crosses fingers that I can do it!!)

Wish me luck!

Stand up to Cancer

As a lot of you know, my father has stage four prostate cancer.

He never liked doctors apparently. And as a result, (at least from what I understand) of not going and complications from diabetes masking his diagnosis, we all got the news early last year.

I've only known my father now five years. My best memories of him are with him, my sister and the rest of family all celebrating my niece's graduation from high school.

During my journey with him, there's been a mix of feelings of why, how and sadness. Now, I'm able to write about it because I'm really at peace with the decisions and choices he made. Good and bad. I forgive him.

Guess in life you never know what can happen. But if I could you ask you all anything, I would ask you to never take anyone for granted and please , get yourselves checked out healthwise.

Early detection is the key. With the help of Social Vibe (thanks Becks) and my sponsor Ed Hardy, I'm asking you to click the link the widget at the bottom of the page and Stand up to Cancer.

Basically since all of us know about the wonderful advances made in various treatments of cancer, Stand Up to Cancer, wants to make sure that technological and other advances get the funding they need quickly to help the people who need it.

Since the economy is so bad. All I ask from all of you is click the link to get involved or you can always support your own charity.

New Month, new goals 2.1

Okay...I promised you all an introduction to my characters for the Nocturne Bites submission that i'm writing.

I finished my revised outline...Very very early this morning. Just need to print it out....And begin to dissect the story from beginning to end.

The story is called Dragon Wars: Kergan.

Kergan is the home of Prince Julian Kergan, who along w/his friend Olivia are racing to retrieve "assets" that were previously from their home and bring them back to neutral world Gaia.

The other racer, Prince Caleb of Tacorian w/Dragon, Orion, are not only after the assets...but have an even more sinister agenda.

There are twists and turns and some people and things during the course of this story aren't what they seem...

But nonethless...That is all i'm going to say about it...For now...Here are my muses....

Meet Julian Kergan..

For people that aren't familiar with the show The Tudors.....this is Henry Cavill...One of my favorite shows....Isn't he beautiful?

Here is Olivia....

Yes Natalie is my muse....I'll miss her very much on The Tudors. Her acting was no less than excellent.

And finally....Caleb of Tacorian..

Who else would it be? LOL...LOL...LOL

The report Jan. 31

I made a lot of progress after work on my Nocturne Bites submission.

Although I didn't do a lot of writing, I found an original outline a few days ago and tonight, I began the process of tightening and restructing the outline.

Very proud of the story as the characters and the plot are becoming more and more defined.

Tomorrow....I think you'll meet my three main characters....Julian, Olivia and Caleb..

Think you'll like them!!

btw.....

A new journal entry for Trina's Journal is up!!!

For those who follow Stay, there's a side story that I write on occasion called Trina's Journal.

These are Trina's thoughts as she travels around with the guys....

The latest personal journal entry is up

Enjoy!

I've decided to do it

I'm taking the plunge and attempting to write my first nocturne bites or a spice brief for eharlequin.

I've got a great support system in my family and in my crit partner Kerri to boot.

Lately after visiting several authors various websites, the goals that you make for yourself are key.

So everyday, (hopefully) i'm going to write. Whether it's a page or synopsis or plot an outline.

Not bad... This week alone was 1115 words.....

Off I go!

BTW since its Super Bowl weekend and because I haven't updated the movie Friday section in a while, the movie to watch this weekend is....

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY.

One of the best football films i've seen in a while. And personally one of Jamie Foxx's best roles.
Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx, Dennis Quaid...Oliver Stone directing...Is there any more to love about this movie!!!!

Oh yes.....a couple of appearances by legendary actress Ann-Margaret...That made the movie!!!

Change has come to the White House!!!

Like everyone else over the last few days, I spent a great deal time glued to my TV set watching all of the historic events unfold.

I couldn't help but to cry tears of joy at what all of us were seeing. I also thought about the others who struggled and even gave their lives to give all of us a chance to see what could be.

President Obama's campaign and election inspired all of us to wonder what "could be" if you work hard enough.
He ran a campaign built on progress and the need for change. The country before yesterday, could no longer be run as it was being run.

President Obama and Vice President Biden's campaign was an inspirational moment in our history. I'm looking forward to the change in whatever form, big or small he'll be able to bring to all of us.

Lincoln, FDR, RFK, JFK, MLK, Malcolm, Medgar. I thought of all of them this past weekend and if I could. I would say "thank you."

Thanks for paving the way so that anyone regardless of race, creed, color or background could keep driving until their dreams were met

A lot of your dreams yesterday from all of you were realized, but now, it's time to look forward of what's to come.

Do I think our new President will move mountains and part the sea? Absolutely not.

Do I think he'll be able to do some of what he promised to do? I sincerely hope so.

Regardless of what you think politically or personally. I wish he and beautiful family well.
He's got a heavy task ahead of him that I wouldn't wish upon anyone. Tasks that I have a feeling that none of us will see the benefits from for several years.

President Obama asked all of us to help and I'm very eager to do so. His address yesterday was perfect. He was straight to the point, eloquent and outlined an ambitious plan that no one has ever done before and after this hopefully never has to do again.

So, change has come. He has already signed several executive orders reversing several plans the former administration wanted pushed ahead.

Only time will tell I guess.

Good luck President Obama.
